The Lie
It all started last week... I was waiting outside the bathroom for Elder Gurr to finish up when a member of the Spanish ward started to talk to me. He mistakenly thought I was a Spanish Elder and threw his arm around my shoulder and started talking about who knows what. I replied in broken Spanish that I don't speak Spanish and so he looked at my name tag. He had a hard time pronouncing my name as do most people that don't speak English but then after that the lie began. On my name tag it proudly read "L'Église de Jésus-Christ des Saints des Derniers Jours" which obviously isn't in English or Spanish and he took notice of that. He asked in broken English what language it was and I told him French.
He was so happy. He then asked me a question that I didn't quite understand, I thought he asked "Do you speak French" to which I replied yes but then he got really happy and said (again in broken English) "wow it's really rare to have a missionary not from Utah or even America we are really excited for you, welcome to America!" And he was hugging me and dancing around me and then he took off very happily. As it turns out he didnt ask if I spoke French, he asked if I was from France. So now we have this influential member of the Spanish ward telling everyone there is an Elder from France in the YSA and it's gotten so out of control that I can't stop it. I met his son recently returned from a mission and before I could say much to him his dad grabbed me and said "tell him where you're from"
"Er... Utah..."
"What?"
"Utah beach... France."
So now I have a new alter ego as Elder Guillaume Murdoché from Normandy that will last until I get transferred.
It was a pretty good week other wise we set a quarterly goal of 70 baptisms at MLC and just started grinding.
Despite being a big fat liar and not being French I speak the truth when I say that this church is true and that the gospel brings happiness into people's lives. In Malachi 3 the Lord invites us to try him and see the blessings that will come from obeying the law of tithing. I believe that we can test every bit of the gospel and find similar results as well.
Je vous aime,
Elder Murdoché
