Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Martin Luther King.... Junior (day):
It was MLK day this week and our stake combined with a bunch of different denominations to do a city wide day of service as a result, our Pday got moved to Wednesday. We congregated as a Zone to a black Baptist church in the hood and lucky us got to sit up on the choir seats. We had an hour long
inter-faith worship service that was really interesting to see. I never realized that in most religions they write out their prayers. I actually couldn't differentiate between a prayer and normal speaking because not even their tone of voice would change. The hymns were the best part though. They had some black dude with a classic black dude voice leading us out and at first he tried relying on us because we were supposed to be the choir but a lot of the Elders were really nervous and weren't swaying back and forth clapping their hands like they ought to have done so he kind of gave up on us and we sang with the congregation. The dudes voice was super hard to sing with because he went so high so in the recordings we sound tone deaf.
We sang a closing song about Martin Luther King Jr that was basically their version of "Praise to the man"
Sing about Martin
Sing about caring
Sing about peace
All around the world
x1,000,000,000 (occasionally switching up 'caring' for 'loving')
After that we scattered to the individual service projects we signed up for. Elder Gurr and I went to the church and helped make non-perishable sack lunches for homeless people and also made Valentine's for kids in Cooks Children's hospital. It was cool to get to know people of other faiths there. They were pretty much forced to talk with us so we were able to talk with people that wouldn't normally talk to us.
The rest of our week was pretty rough around the edges. It seems that every time we get pumped for something Satan tries to throw opposition our way. We faced some tough stuff but at the end of each day as we followed the spirit we felt satisfied the we had proven conqueror over the enemy of all righteousness.
I know this church is true, and frankly the gospel of Jesus Christ is the only way we can be relieved from feelings of guilt and shame.
Love y'all,
Elder Murdoch
