Anti'd

Anti'd: A few weeks ago this guy just showed up to church and we were pretty excited about that because people just don't show up to church. We started teaching him and he had already read all of the standard works which was really cool and my companion and the other Elder we were on a trio exchange with were really wowed by that and thought he was super solid but I was a little wary. Something was just a little off about all this. A weeks went by and we weren't able to meet with him but this week on exchange with Elder Galmeister we went back and before hand I had prepared a little bit but I wasn't sure what to expect. We went in and after we exchanged pleasantries he threw a fat stack of anti-Mormon material at us. Most of it was garbage, a bunch of blatant lies and half-baked arguments some of the stuff he threw at us I didn't know about and I was caught off guard. His source was some dubious .net site or something. He asked me how in the world I cou

The Grind

We grinded all week trying to find more people to teach and we found a couple but we also found a lot of people that would rather have us out of Fort Worth. We were walking to contact this one guy and we saw this other guy wearing some sort of fez I knew that talking to this guy would probably take a good chunk out of our afternoon but we tried to give him a card anyway. He said he didn't want it but then sucked in a breath and walked towards us and proceeded to preach from his sidewalk about how Donald Trump is spoken of in the Qur'an and how he's going to cage us in America. Then of course he talked about race for a good 20 minutes while we tried to leave but he just kept talking. He told us we could be cleansed from sin by our works and we objected but he kept going. He ended by talking about the pyramids in "Ethiopia" and how he has a box set of DVDs that explain how they predict the end of the world and how African technology far exceeded anything that exists

Zoo Wee Mama

This week went by super quick but here are a few highlights: This one guy just showed up to church out if the blue and although he wasn't a member knew a bucketload about the church and the gospel and wanted us to come over to "answer some questions." He was really nice but I kind of thought it was a trap. Typically when people randomly ask questions we get hit with a fat stack of anti. We went to his house on Wednesday and he revealed he knew even more about the gospel and started asking some super deep questions that I never really thought/cared about but Elder Thueson who was in a trio with us that day and loves deep doctrine was answering all his questions.  We also went on exchange with the assistants this week, Elder Christensen and I tried to go to a college campus but we forgot it was the Friday before spring break so no one was there. We had one good contact but everyone else in the sparsely populated campus was not super into it. We met these two

Texas Winter

Image
Texas doesn't usually get cold but every once in a while it'll drop to the 20s and this week was one of those once in a whiles. It was nice just a few weeks ago and the temperature should rise by Thursday. I know 20 degrees isn't that cold but no one that comes to Texas (myself included) brought many warm clothes. We did meet a lot of cool people on the TCC campus (we can't prosecute on TCU so we go tk the local community college TCC instead) we talked to one girl walking to her car and she decided to sit down with us and asked us a ton of questions. College kids rarely give you the time of day so to actually sit down with one who was a complete stranger to us was crazy awesome. She asked the traditional questions about polygamy and blood atonement and all the other rumors that get passed around she kind of knew about the 116 page manuscript which no one knows about outside of the church. She wasn't interested in taking the discussions at first but as we talked s

More Africans

We were grinding all week and literally no one answered their door. It was super rough. Then on Sunday we had two people randomly show up at the YSA ward and said they wanted to learn more about the church. It was super amazing. And then we contacted an African that ordered a bible a long time ago and eventually we just gave it to one of the kids who lived there because she was never home. But yesterday she was home with her Brother and they were super interested in the Book of Mormon and kept asking a bunch of questions and said they'd read it before we even invited them to.  Then this other African girl showed up that I had met on TCC campus one time and she said she wanted to meet up it was super cool.  Other than that not much happened this week. Love y'all, Elder Murdoch   We found a turkey out in the hood

I Wanna Dance Party

Image
I wanna dance party: We were out contacting in the only nice neighborhood in East side and Elder Gurr and I called out to these Africans eating oranges out on the porch, the wife went inside but the husband talked to us and invited us in. He was super cool and wanted to hear whatever we had to say. After getting rid of a few initial distractions we started teaching the Restoration. There was a language barrier for sure because the guy preferred either Kisii or Kiswahili and my Kiswahili had diminished from being able to kind of say a few phrases to picking up a few words here and there. We taught anyway though but right after we finished talking about the role of a prophet he cut us off and started talking about African dance ministry and how much he likes it. Then without time for objections started playing some on his TV, with the IPhone 3Gs camera quality and dancing and all. Elder Gurr wasnt used to African culture and was stupified. The guy then fed us oranges per h

The Spy Who Kept Committments

Image
The Spy who kept commitments: On Monday night we got a call from some of the Spanish Elders saying that they had met this girl who just walked into church after their ward had ended and taught her the Restoration in the foyer she said she loved it and wanted to join the church. That's all well and good but then they referred her to us and things went out of control. I was on exchange on Tuesday but apparently she came to the last 15 minutes of Institute which was cool and all but then we invited her to the Come follow me activity the next night and the first red flag came about when she started texting and calling us from 9 different numbers all cryptic like. She called us during the come follow me activity and said she'd be there in 10 minutes. 10 minutes came and went and she was a no show. A whole hour and a half came and went, nada. We called her when we got home and she said she was at Walmart(?) And we were kind of like okay whatever but it was aro
